‘If Beale Street Could Talk,’ ‘Leave No Trace’ Nominated for Top Independent Spirit Awards“If Beale Street Could Talk,” “You Were Never Really Here,” “Eighth Grade,” “First Reformed” and “Leave No Trace” have been nominated as the best independent films of 2018 by the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which announced its nominees on Friday morning in Los Angeles.

In one of the most evenly spread Spirit Awards fields ever, “Eighth Grade,” “First Reformed,” “You Were Never Really Here” and “We the Animals” each received four nominations, while “Beale Street,” “Leave No Trace,” “Private Life” and “The Tale” each received three.

“Madeline’s Madeline,” “Hereditary,” “Sorry to Bother You” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” each received two nominations.

Acting noms went to several presumed Oscar contenders, including Glenn Close for “The Wife,” Regina King for “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Richard E. Grant for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and Adam Driver for “BlacKkKlansman,” along with Thomasin Harcourt Mckenzie for “Leave No Trace,” Elsie Fisher and Josh Hamilton for “Eighth Grade,” Daveed Diggs for “Blindspotting” and Carey Mulligan for “Wildlife.”

In the Best First Feature category, the nominees were “Hereditary,” “Sorry to Bother You,” “The Tale,” “We the Animals” and “Wildlife.”

To qualify for the Spirit Awards, a film must meet a variety of criteria, including having a budget of less than $20 million. It must also contain “significant American content,”  a requirement that can be fulfilled by having the film set and shot in the U.S. or by having U.S. citizens or permanent residents in two of the three creative positions of director, writer and producer.

This year, major Oscar contenders “Roma” and “The Favourite” didn’t meet the American-content requirement and were eligible only in the Best International Film category. They were both nominated in the category, along with “Burning,” “Happy as Lazzaro” and “Shoplifters.”

The Oscar-contending films that did not qualify for the Spirit Awards because of budgetary reasons include “Black Panther,” “Vice,” “Beautiful Boy,” “Widows,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Mary Queen of Scots.”

Spirit Award nominations are made by a variety of nominating committees rather than a vote of the entire membership. The final voting is open to all the members of Film Independent, which is a mixture of film professionals and movie fans who pay an annual fee.

Last year, three of the Spirit Awards’ five Best Feature nominees went on to receive Oscar nominations for Best Picture, while nine of the 20 acting nominees were also singled out by the Academy, including winners Frances McDormand, Allison Janney and Sam Rockwell.

Since the Oscars expanded to more than five Best Picture nominees in 2009, there has never been a year in which at least one of the Spirits Awards nominees did not also receive an Oscar nom in the top category. The high was four films nominated for both awards, which happened in 2010 and again in 2014.

In the first 26 years of the Spirit Awards’ existence, its Best Feature winner only went on to win the Best Picture Oscar once, when “Platoon” did it in 1986. But beginning in 2012, the two awards agreed five times in six years, including four in a row from 2014 through 2017. That streak came to an end last year, when “Get Out” won the Spirit Award but lost to “The Shape of Water” at the Oscars.

This year’s nominations were announced at a press conference by Molly Shannon and Gemma Chan.

The 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards will take place on Saturday, Feb. 23 and will be broadcast live on IFC.

Next week key events in the Eurozone includes EC opinion on Italian budted, PMI data and Europena Central Bank minutes. Analysts at Danske Bank, expect another decline in EZ manufacturing PMIs in November and they see the European Commission starting the process of opening an excessive deficit procedure (EDP) against the country relatively quickly.

    *Key Quotes: *

“In the euro area, *PMIs for November are due on Friday. *In October, manufacturing PMI fell for the third successive month and came in at 52.0 and services fell to 53.7 from 54.7 in September. We expect another decline in manufacturing PMI due to the still negative order-inventory balance and forecast the November print to come in at 51.5. For Service PMI it will be interesting to see whether the weaker activity in October was of a temporary or more persistent nature. We expect the former and hence see scope for a small rebound in service PMI to 54.”

“The European Commission is expected to issue its final opinion on Italy’s budget on Wednesday. Since Italy refrained from material changes to its budget, *we expect the European Commission to start the process ofopening an excessive deficit procedure *(EDP) against the country relatively quickly. The Italian bond market could come under renewed pressure if an EDP is formally
    launched.”

“*We also get ECB minutes from the 25 October meeting on Thursday. *During the meeting, no significant new policy guidance was announced. However, the minutes may contain colour on the upcoming crucial 13 December meeting, in terms of ending the APP and the shift to more conventional policy tool guidance. We will naturally also focus on the inflation and growth assessment. Recall that Draghi only mentioned downside risks to the ECBs growth outlook, while still keeping the outlook broadly balanced.” Reported by FXstreet.com 7 hours ago.

Spin Master teamed with lifestyle expert and new mom, Michelle Jerson, and YourUpdate.Tv on a nationwide media tour featuring the best board games for the holidays.

    Problem Solving Games:

Headbanz is a classic, rapid-action family game where players receive a card to stick in their headband and must answer “Yes” or “No” questions to find out who they are.

The first person to three correct guesses wins. It’s perfect for kids and adults alike, provides non-stop fun and allows kids to develop deductive reasoning and problem-solving skills in a thrilling way. Who thought learning would be this fun?

    Interactive Games:

Soggy Doggy is the showering, shaking, wet doggy game. This Game of the Year winner has players racing around the board, taking turns to wash Soggy Doggy, but beware, he loves to shake! If he shakes on a player’s turn, they must go back to the basket and start over.

The first player to make it around the board to the doggy basket wins!

Pimple Pete is an interactive game that offers a real “yuck” factor! Take turns with the spinner to determine where to pop the zit on Pete’s face, but players must be careful when they pop!

Too much pressure and the mega-zit on Pete’s nose will explode and they will end up losing the game! The last player left is crowned the Pimple Popping Champion.

Croc N Roll, the up and active pre-school game that really gets kids moving! In this game, players jump around from one lily pad to the other to avoid the unpredictable Croc.

With two variable speeds, colored lily pads to jump on, and guard rails to prevent the Croc ball from rolling away, kids will be hopping and jumping around for hours in this game of keep-away!

    Games for Traveling:

Perplexus Original is the perfect game to help pass the time, whether you’re on the road or stuck in an airport. Inside the spherical labyrinth, you’ll face 20 feet worth of challenging twists, turns and obstacles.

Flip, twist and spin Perplexus to move the ball along the numbered path. When you fall off the track, head back to the start and try again. With multiple levels of difficulty, this game is easy to play, but hard to master. We promise you won’t be able to put it down!

Rome, Italy, Nov 16, 2018 / 06:27 pm (CNA).- Catholic leaders are open to discussing with the Italian government a court ruling saying Italy has the right to recover millions of dollars from the Church from a previous tax exemption.

According to DW, an exemption was established in the beginning of 2012, which allowed for non-commercial Church properties to be exempt from paying an Italian municipal tax – the IMU.

The case had been opened that year by a Montessori school and an owner of a bed-and-breakfast, who called the exemption unfair to properties offering similar services.

In December 2012, the European Commission in Brussels declared the exemption to be unlawful. However, the court ruled that it would be too complicated to recover the money, as the tax database and Italian property title registry were not up-to-date.

However, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg overruled that decision this month, saying that Italy has the right to take back millions of euros, the Associated Press reported.

On Thursday, Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, head of the Italian bishops’ conference, said the Church had not yet begun a discussion with the government, but “certainly some contacts will be necessary,” according to the Associated Press. Reported by CNA 1 hour ago.

    · *Broad-based USD weakness helps pair climb higher.*
    · *Italy - German bond yield gap widens to keep euro's gains limited*.

The EUR/USD pair gained traction in the NA session and advanced to its highest level since November 7 at 1.1464 as the broad-based USD weakness provided a boost to the pair. As of writing, the pair was trading at 1.1450, adding 0.3% on a daily basis.

Although the US economic docket didn't feature any macroeconomic data releases that could potentially move the market, the greenback came under pressure amid falling T-bond yields. After failing to break above the 3.01% mark today, the 10-year yield turned negative on the day to drag the US Dollar ındex lower. At the moment, the DXY, which fell to a daily low of 96.21, is down 0.2% on the day at 96.22.

Earlier today, the data published by the European Central Bank showed that the current account surplus (seasonally adjusted) fell to €17 billion in September from €24.3 billion recorded in August.

Meanwhile, Italian Economy Minister Tria told reporters that the bond yield spread had no influence on the intention of the deficit target added that Italy's plan would not change. Following these comments, the gap between 10-year Italian and German bond yield rose to its highest level in more than three weeks at 320 bps to make it difficult for the shared currency to preserve its strength.

    *Technical levels to consider*

The initial resistance for the pair aligns at 1.1500 (psychological level) ahead of 1.1535 (100-DMA) and 1.1620 (Oct. 16 high). On the downside, supports are located at 1.1370 (20-DMA), 1.1300 (psychological level/Oct. 31 low) and 1.1215 (Nov. 12 low). Reported by FXstreet.com 11 hours ago.
