Global Dollar Liquidity Shortage Explodes - Worse Than European Crisis

Global Dollar Liquidity Shortage Explodes - Worse Than European Crisis Very quietly, in the last few days, cross currency basis swaps (CCBS) related to the dollar have reversed their rise and* started collapsing deeper into negative territory*… again. This might not be of much interest to buyers of global equity markets at this point, but it is signalling* ominous signs of growing funding stress in the financial “plumbing”.*

*
*

As Bloomberg notes “cross-currency basis swaps, which money managers and corporate treasurers outside the U.S. can use to borrow in dollars, remain close to the widest levels since January even after quarter-end, when such financing strains typically dissipate. *The market was a key indicator of stress during the financial crisis*, and while it’s nowhere near the alarming levels of that era, it’s still garnering the attention of analysts.”

The shortage is across all the majors...

The shortage in Europe is the worst since the EU Crisis and the shortage in UK is the worst since Lehman as Japanese dollar shortage is extreme too.

In simple terms, the CCBS is the cost in basis points (typically for three months) of swapping these currencies into dollars over and above prevailing interest rate differentials*. In a benign environment the CCBS should trade at zero, not in negative territory. The latter implies a shortage of US dollar balance sheet (credit) offered by the global banking system*. As the chart above shows, dollar liquidity became extremely tight in December 2016, especially for Yen borrowers, although it not nearly as bad as what happened in May of 2015 when we first brought attention to this little followed corner of the financial system. Despite the weakness in the dollar during much of the current year, the dollar liquidity issue never completely disappeared.

*There are several reasons why,* like in recent years, financing in dollars is becoming more expensive, but this very sudden spike in dollar funding costs - i.e. a sudden dollar shortage - likely combines the effects of  the perception of credit risk for the European region’s banks (Italy), the prospect that a U.S. tax overhaul could trigger dollar repatriation, and the outlook for monetary-policy divergence with the Federal Reserve starting to unwind its balance sheet, and analysts see the trend only worsening (even as Draghi promises to taper).

As is clear above,* there are always year-end liquidity strains but this collapse is drastically beyond just that.*

“My first take on this a week or two ago was that a lot of the stress was just people preparing for the end of the year earlier,” Lyn Graham-Taylor, senior rates strategist at Rabobank.

*“But now it does look pretty bad.”*

As WSJ reports, the scarcity is having other effects, boosting some markets.

The widening of the basis swap makes it more lucrative for any U.S. investors who can expand their balance sheets to buy euro-denominated assets, given banks are so keen to get their hands on their dollars. As a result, the eurozone’s safest short-dated bonds have rallied in recent weeks.

“The combination of a decline in excess reserves, higher short-term rates, and dollars coming back to the US from overseas earnings should *result in a structural shift in the money markets and dollar-funding availability*,” said Nomura in a research note this week.

Emerging markets are even more exposed to the U.S. dollar than advanced economies like the eurozone.

*“The reliance on US dollar funding has become increasingly marked for emerging markets since the global financial crisis in international debt markets,” *the research noted.

Italy says Amazon will pay $118 million to end tax dispute

MILAN (AP) — Italian tax authorities say Amazon will pay 100 million euros ($118 million) to end a dispute over its tax payments from 2011-2015. The agreement announced Friday comes as many European countries seek to close loopholes in tax payments by major multinationals. Amazon confirmed the agreement in a statement, without disclosing the amount it would pay. The internet retailer headquartered in the U.S. state of Washington said it set up an Italian branch in May 2015 "with all retail revenues, expenses, profits and taxes due now accounted for in Italy." It further said it had invested more than 800 million euros in Italy and created 3,000 jobs since 2010. Italian tax authorities have reached similar deals with Google and Apple. I traveled for weeks with an iPhone X as my only computer — here's what I loved, and what Apple needs to improve (AAPL)

I traveled for weeks with an iPhone X as my only computer — here's what I loved, and what Apple needs to improve (AAPL) · *I took my new iPhone X with me on a weeks-long vacation to Italy, forgoing a laptop or tablet.*
· *The phone's camera and the battery life made it an amazing travel buddy, and I never felt like I needed a "real" digital camera.*
· *But the experience wasn't perfect. Among other things, the nearly borderless screen on its front made the phone unwieldy to use at times.
*

--------------------Every November when my partner and I take our big annual vacation, I take along some kind of computer, just in case I need it.

Typically I bring along a laptop, and last year, I tried using a hybrid tablet-notebook. On this year's journey — a whirlwind three-week tour of Italy — I decided to travel even lighter. The only computer I took along was my iPhone X.

I had just replaced my trusty old iPhone 6S, and I was eager to see how far my fancy new $999 smartphone could take me. The answer: Pretty darn far!

Here's what I liked and didn't like about having the iPhone X as my travel companion.

*The iPhone X's camera is amazing, and I never wished I had a "real" camera*

The iPhone X's camera is really, really good. I'm not a camera expert, so I don't know how it stacks up against, say, that of the Google Pixel 2. All I know is that it's amazing, and I never for a second wished I had brought a "real" digital camera with me. Instead, the iPhone X makes for a perfect vacation point-and-shoot camera.

I mean, check this out:

I'm biased because I took that picture, but it's pretty good, right?

And the iPhone X's Portrait Mode, which blurs the background to create professional-looking photos, is extra-fun when you have busy Italian scenes in the background, like so:

Better yet, it turns out that Portrait Mode was the ideal way to capture every noodle and dollop of sauce in the pasta we ate across Italy:

I won't bore you with another vacation photo, but I particularly loved the iPhone X's second rear camera, which has a zoom lens. Its 2X optical zoom allows you to focus in on objects without losing image quality. It's really helpful for getting that perfect photo.

*The phone's battery life is pretty great*

The battery in my iPhone 6S left a lot to be desired. Wherever I took it, I had to bring along at least one external battery pack. Heck, I'd routinely run down 25% of the battery just on my normal commute.

It was even worse when I was traveling. I typically rely on the battery-intensive Google Maps to get around. And I'm the annoying tourist who takes photos of everything, which curtailed my battery life even more.

So my iPhone X was a wonderful change. I still carried around my external battery pack out of habit, but I didn't need to use it once on our all-day journeys. My phone got close to running out of battery life a few times, thanks to long days or late nights, but every single time it held out until we got back to our room.

I haven't done any scientific testing on the iPhone X's battery versus those of other smartphones. But I do know that for my purposes, my new phone's battery life was great.

**But the iPhone X isn't perfect**

My colleague Dennis Green sold his iPhone X because he hated how hard it was for him to use with one hand. I don't feel as strongly as he did, but he had a point.

I'm a fan of the iPhone X's big, nearly borderless screen. But its design can make the phone hard to use at times. For example, it can be difficult with one hand to access the control panel to adjust the volume or the screen's brightness, in part because Apple relocated it to the top-right corner of the display.

The result of such design decisions was that instead of paying attention to my surroundings, I had to worry about how I was holding my phone. They also made it more likely I would drop it when I was trying to take in the sights, such as Michelangelo's David.

I've also been underwhelmed by Apple's FaceID facial recognition system that you use to unlock the iPhone X. It works OK for the most part. But when I was on a bouncing coastal bus, a poorly lit train, or was just speed-walking to dinner, it frequently required multiple tries to recognize me.

*Getting rid of the headphone jack still stinks*

Much as I like the iPhone X, I'm still not happy Apple decided to get rid of the headphone jack in it and the other new iPhones. Most of the time, the lack of a headphone jack isn't a big problem. But when you're on an airplane and you can't charge your phone at the same time that you're listening on your headphones to the movie you're watching? Sheesh. That's frustrating.

*SEE ALSO: I've been using my iPhone X for nearly a month, and I've decided I hate it*

Apple is Currently Sold Out of AirPods Until January

If you were planning to purchase AirPods as a last-minute holiday gift, it may be challenging to find a pair in time for Christmas.
Apple's wireless earphones are currently estimated for delivery in early January if ordered today from Apple's online store in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and several other countries.

AirPods are also currently out of stock at most of Apple's retail stores around the world, and at authorized resellers such as Best Buy, Macy's, Target, Walmart, and Verizon in the United States. Bottom line: they're hard to find anywhere.

At $159, AirPods are a more affordable gift idea than many Apple products, which may be causing stronger demand than Apple can keep up with.

If you are still hunting for AirPods, there may be one option. AT&T appears to have stock on its website, but you may have to pay an extra $14.95 for express delivery within 2-3 business days, and we still can't guarantee they'll arrive before Christmas.

Other gifts available by Christmas for under $200, and that an Apple fan is likely to appreciate, include the Apple TV 4K, BeatsX, an official Apple-branded iPhone case, Apple Watch bands, or simply an Apple Store or Apple Music gift card.

Apple's online store is now offering free next-day delivery for all in-stock items ordered by 3 p.m. local time on December 22 in the United States.
