Comcast and Fox are in a heated to battle to snatch up Sky — here's why they both see the UK satellite company as vital to their futures

Comcast and Fox are in a heated to battle to snatch up Sky — here's why they both see the UK satellite company as vital to their futures US entertainment giant Comcast increased its bid for European broadcaster Sky last week, stymieing Rupert Murdoch's takeover attempt for the company.

Comcast's newest offer came in at £14.75 a share, valuing Sky at £26 billion ($34 billion), up from its previous offer of £22 billion. Earlier in the day, 21st Century Fox bid £14 a share for Sky.

So why are Comcast and Fox locked into a bidding war for Sky?

*Actually, it's not just Fox and Comcast*

Both offers for Sky are part of a larger fight between Comcast and Disney to acquire assets from Fox. Fox already owns 39% of Sky, and is bidding for the remaining 61%.

All of those assets will go to Disney if it should succeed in its acquisition plans for Fox.

"Disney is very serious about wanting Sky," Mary Ann Halford, a former Fox International executive vice president, told Business Insider. "This wouldn't have happened without Disney and Fox executives talking and discussing," Halford, who is now a senior adviser at the strategy consulting firm OC&C Strategy Consultants, said. But Comcast is also very serious about wanting Sky. In fact, it may drop its plans to go after Fox, and solely focus on winning majority stake in Sky, according to CNBC.

*So what exactly is Sky?*

Sky is a European telecom company that serves 23 million customers, mostly Satellite DBS subscribers, in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland.

For perspective, Comcast, the largest cable service provider in the US, serves 22 million video customers and 26 million internet customers.

*I thought satellite was dying and customers are cutting the cord on cable?*

While cord cutting is a real concern to businesses that that offer cable and satellite-TV services, there is still a market for these products.

"It will go that route eventually, but it'll be a very long tail," Greg Williams, an analyst at Cowen, told Business Insider. "There are still a lot of folks that still like the traditional linear experience, especially the older cohorts."

Williams said cord cutting cuts the cable subscriber base by 3-4% each year with satellite closer to 6-8% a year.

"Satellite is an inferior product to wireline linear television for a couple reasons," he said. "The main one is you don't have the bundle."

Satellite companies typically provide linear TV without an accompanying broadband experience, meaning there's no ability to incentivize customers by offer service packages together.

This is where Sky has an advantage over traditional satellite companies. UK telecom company Openreach connects nearly all homes in the UK to a national broadband network.

"Sky does sort of have a double play because in the UK ... through Openreach; The UK allows Sky to get really good broadband for cheap," Williams said. "The government allows it for really good rates, wholesale prices so they get the copper connection or even the fiber connection under UK regulation."

The double play factor, in addition to 'inferior competition" in the UK, places Sky in strong standing in Europe, according to Williams.

*What about competing with OTT?*

TV delivered over the internet, or 'OTT,' is the future, and all the major media companies realize this. So a play for Sky doesn't mean Comcast or Disney are attempting to revive a dying business model. They want to use subscribers and create an OTT foothold of their own.

"They know that [Sky's] 23 million base is slowly depleting, but they can migrate those customer onto next TV platform or some other OTT platform in the future," Williams said of Comcast.

Having an international footprint is especially attractive to Comcast, which trails Fox and Disney in non-US markets.

"They punch underweight" internationally, Halford said of Comcast.

With Sky, Comcast would have "this huge international base now that Comcast has been dying to have for quite some time," according to Williams.

And while OTT consumption is growing around the globe, some experts say that cord cutting in Europe isn't as extreme as it appears in the US.

*What else does Sky own?*

"Comcast is the preeminent pay-TV provider in the US," Halford said. "In Europe, the preeminent provider is Sky."

Sky provides a strong content portfolio to whichever company eventually acquires it. In addition to the original content it produces, it has the majority of Premier League football TV rights, and exclusive rights to the German Bundesliga. Those exclusive, or majority, sports-viewing rights are attractive to Fox, Comcast, and Disney.

And it may be a long summer of increased bidding before we know which company wins out.

Saudi Cinema Spearheaded by New York Film Academy Alumni

New York Film Academy (NYFA) has trained many rising Saudi filmmakers, producers, cinematographers, and actors, including those who featured work at the Saudi Corner at Cannes, and recently partnered with Dar Al-Hekma University in Jeddah for a five-day training, together with Law & Order director Gilbert Shilton.

NEW YORK (PRWEB) July 17, 2018

Since the reopening of cinemas in Saudi Arabia this April, what CNN calls “Saudi cinema’s new dawn” has been spearheaded by many alumni, students, and collaborators of the New York Film Academy (NYFA).

NYFA has trained many rising Saudi filmmakers, producers, cinematographers, and actors whose work featured at the Saudi Corner at Cannes, and recently partnered with Dar Al-Hekma University in Jeddah for a five-day training, together with Law & Order director Gilbert Shilton.

At Cannes, five of the nine films presented by Saudi Arabia featured the work of NYFA students and alumni, including brothers and fellow BFA Filmmaking graduates Maan Bin Abdulrahman and Talha Bin Abdulrahman.

Before debuting at Cannes, the brothers collaborated together on Talha’s NYFA thesis film, The Scapegoat, which screened at the 14th Dubai International Film Festival as well as the second annual Young Saudi Film Festival, Irvine International Film Festival, Orlando Film Festival, San Antonio Film Festival, and Chandler Film Festival. Working through their production company Prince of Arabia Entertainment, the brothers also co-directed their Cannes offering, Film School Musical. The musical short won the Best Shorts Competition at the Hollywood Comedy Shorts Film Festival as well as the Jury Prize for Best Musical and Best Cinematography, garnering numerous nominations from festivals along the way.

“I want to do something that my country and my people are proud of, and something the world can watch as well,” Maan Bin Abdulrahman told CNN from Cannes. “And hopefully we can mix those two.”

Saudi reopened its cinemas in April of 2018, followed closely by The Saudi Short Corner at Cannes. Both represented significant milestones in the Kingdom’s expansion of cinema under Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman’s Vision 2030 program, which lifted a decades-long ban on film.

“We’re glad that this mentality is changing,” Talha Bin Abdulrahman told CNN. “And it’s changing obviously because the government is changing.”

In June, NYFA Los Angeles announced a contest celebrating the opening of Saudi cinemas, encouraging Saudi artists to submit a short video to win a full-tuition scholarship to a four-week program of their choice.

“The New York Film Academy Los Angeles has been the hub for training many Saudi visual and performing artists,” explains NYFA Vice President, Middle East & North Africa, Tami Alexander. “We had one male and one female winner who each showed great potential. We look forward to welcoming them on campus, and seeing them bring their knowledge back to the Kingdom.”

CNN also spotted the work of Saudi Arabia’s first female film director Haifaa Al-Mansour, whose groundbreaking feature film Wadjda was the Kingdom’s first submission for the Academy Awards -- and featured NYFA alum Ahd Kamel.

Kamel, who recently starred in Netflix’s Collateral, was recently named by Vogue Arabia as “the breakout star for the times.” Kamel told Vogue, “I feel very blessed to do what I love.”

NYFA has also hosted the annual Young Saudi Film Festival (YSFF) at its Los Angeles campus, providing aspiring Saudi filmmakers a space to screen their work. In 2018 the festival received over 80 submissions and was hosted by alum Maan bin Abdulrahman.

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Culture also recently visited the campus as a part of Saudi Cultural Days, where student Rakan Anneghaimshi and alum Maan Bin Abdulrahman hosted a Q&A event featuring Hollywood producer Ted Field (Jumanji, The Chronicles of Riddick). In addition to the Q&A, NYFA screened some of the short films later featured at Cannes for distinguished guests from the Kingdom including Khaled Al Saqer, Meshal AlSaleh, and Abdulaziz AlMutairi.

"We are overwhelmed with pride by the success of our Saudi graduates,” says NYFA President Michael Young. “These young filmmakers have done extraordinary work, they are truly pioneers of cinema in their country."

Armie Hammer ‘Handed at Least a Peach or 2’ Every Night From ‘Call Me By Your Name’ Fans (Video)

“Call Me By Your Name” fans just can’t let go of that infamous peach scene.

Armie Hammer, who starred as Oliver in the Oscar-nominated movie last year, is currently starring in “Straight White Men” on Broadway, and he said that every night after the show, fans stop him to hand him a peach. It’s not a gift, though. It’s for Hammer to sign.

“The [“Call Me By Your Name” fans] who come, you can really spot them right away, and the biggest dead giveaway is, they will normally hand me a peach. Like, I get handed at least a peach or two every stage door,” the 31-year-old actor told Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show” Monday night.

“The first time someone handed me a peach, I was like, ‘oh, thanks!’ and they go, ‘no, no, no, that’s not for you. Will you sign it for me?'” Hammer continued, explaining that at first he was confused, hoping fans weren’t going to eat a peach now stained with Sharpie. “Then I was like, ‘so what are you gonna do with it?'”

“I mean, look, there’s obviously something they could do with it that would be more disturbing — but, the other side is like, they’re going to put that peach on a shelf because it has my signature, and in 10 days it’s going to putrefy and their entire place is going to be full of fruit flies.”

Colbert suggested the rotting fruit might be an “art installation,” and Hammer had quite the burn to describe that: “Watch it wither like Donald Trump’s presidency.” After cheers from the audience, Hammer added: “Sorry, Vlad.”

And in case you don’t get the peach innuendo that references a scene in the Oscar-winning film, let Colbert spell it out for you: “Well, with Donald Trump’s presidency, much like that peach, we are f—ed.”

Vatican's former legal chief says canon law should include care of creation

Rome, Italy, Jul 17, 2018 / 12:14 pm (CNA).- The Vatican's former top advisor on canon law has made a public call to insert legal obligations for the care of creation into the Church’s universal canon law -  making it a legal duty for Catholics not only “not to harm” the environment, but to improve it.

According to veteran Vatican watcher Andrea Tornielli, Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio, former head of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, made the proposal during a July 12 event in Rome titled “Dialogue on Catholic Investments for the Energy Transition.”

During the closed-door discussion, representatives from the Vatican and Catholic organizations spoke about how to invest responsibly towards a transition to renewable energies.

In an interview with Vatican Insider, Coccopalmerio discussed canons 208-221 of the Church’s Code of Canon Law, which enumerate “Obligations and rights of all the faithful.”

This section “outlines an ‘identikit’ of the faithful and of their life as a Christian,” the cardinal said, but noted that nothing is mentioned “about one of the most serious duties: that of protecting and promoting the natural environment in which the faithful live.”

The proposal he outlined, which he suggested could be submitted to the pope but considered by his former department, would be to ask for a new canon to be added to the obligations of the all faithful, specifically treating environmental responsibility.

Coccopalmerio, whose resignation was accepted by Pope Francis in April this year, went on to give his own ideas of how it might be worded: “Every faithful Christian, mindful that creation is the common house, has the grave duty not only not to damage, but also to improve, both through everyday behavior, and through specific initiatives, the natural environment in which each person is called to live.”

The canons Coccopalmerio referenced address general obligations for Catholics relating to the practice of the faith and maintaining communion with the Church. They do not address specific moral obligations or particular doctrinal teachings. Those canons do not, for example, include the Church’s prohibition of artificial contraception or the obligation to observe just labor practices.

Drawing inspiration from Laudato si', Pope Francis' 2015 encyclical on the environment, participants at the event agreed on the Catholic Program of Disinvestment, sponsored by the Catholic Climate Movement, which urges ecclesial institutions to make a public commitment to move away from financial investments in fossil fuels.

Participants also highlighted the importance of pursuing ethical investment strategies in line with the social doctrine of the Catholic Church, according to Tornielli.

Pope Francis has often expressed his environmental concerns and, in his message on the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation in 2016, he said maintaining our common home ought to be considered a work of mercy.

“We usually think of the works of mercy individually and in relation to a specific initiative: hospitals for the sick, soup kitchens for the hungry, shelters for the homeless, schools for those to be educated, the confessional and spiritual direction for those needing counsel and forgiveness,” the pope said in that message.

Looking at the concept of works of mercy, “we see that the object of mercy is human life itself and everything it embraces,” he said. Francis proposed caring for creation as “a complement” to the two traditional sets of seven corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

“May the works of mercy also include care for our common home,” he said, explaining that as a spiritual work, care for creation “calls for a grateful contemplation of God’s world which allows us to discover in each thing a teaching which God wishes to hand on to us.”

In a conference held earlier this month to mark the third anniversary of the publication of Laudato si', Pope Francis said a change of heart is needed when it comes to issues related to the environment.

Future actions which promote the care of creation, “presuppose a transformation on a deeper level, namely a change of hearts and minds,” he said, adding that while this obligation binds all religious  communities, Christians have a special role to play. Reported by CNA 16 hours ago.

LE GRAND-BORNAND, France (AP) — On the second day of racing in the Alps, Tour de France riders take on a relatively short stage but their legs will still strain to overcome several peaks before an unforgiving 18-kilometer climb to the tourist resort of La Rosiere. The stage begins in Albertville, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 1992 and is home to the French ski team. Though the city is synonymous with winter sport, it also has a long association with cycling through riders such as Paul Guiguet (six Tours from 1947 to 1952), Joseph "Pino" Carletti (1973) and Michel Bibollet (1985 and 1988). Known for its breathtaking views, the area was once part of the historical territory of Savoy, now shared between France, Italy and Switzerland. Reported by SeattlePI.com 15 hours ago.

The metro train is equipped with structures and bogies to ensure smooth running, full integral summer / winter air conditioning system, vandal-resistant walls and a video surveillance system featuring continuous image recording of the passenger compartment. Great attention was also paid to the train's design, with input from industry experts, tailored to the customer's requirements.

Deliveries of the 12 trains, that will be manufactured at Hitachi Rail's plants at Reggio Calabria and Naples, are due to start in autumn 2019.
