Flavor Your Life, a European Union funded campaign dedicated to providing the latest in olive oil industry news, discusses local Italian extra virgin olive oil traditions throughout the country.
Olive production is extremely widespread throughout Italy, and represents the deep roots of local culture. One common connection shared throughout Italy, from the North to the South, is extra virgin olive oil. Not only is extra virgin olive oil a great ingredient that is both healthy and fundamental to Italian cuisine, but it also signifies the historical and cultural importance of different regions.
Each region in Italy has different oil. The olives in each region of the country are different and give the product unique qualities. This uniqueness is what makes Italian extra virgin olive oil so diverse and different. For example, Tuscan olive oil tends to be very green and has a complex, rich aroma, whereas Sardinia olive oil is more yellowish and has a lighter and softer aroma.
There are many factors that contribute to the diversity of high quality extra virgin olive oil, including climate, altitude, and the surrounding rural landscape in which the olive tree stands. Numerous varieties of olives are present throughout the Peninsula. These include: Taggiasca and Lavagnina in Liguria, Tuscany Frantoio and Leccino, Casaliva from Lake Garda, Moraiolo in Umbria, Carboncella in Sabina, Gentile in Abruzzo, Rotondella in Campania, Ogliarola Coratina, Cima and Cellina in Puglia, Carolea and Sweet Rossano in Calabria, Nocellara del Belice and Tonda Iblea in Sicily, and Bosana, Black Gonnos, Pizz’e Carroga in Sardinia.
Flavor Your Life, a campaign supported by the European Union, Unaprol and the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, is dedicated to providing the latest in industry news and health information about European extra virgin olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil enhances the flavors of your recipes while providing health benefits. Flavor Your Life campaign, the voice of olive oil production quality control, aims to educate consumers so they can make informed decisions when purchasing olive oil.
