Green, who self-published through AuthorHouse, has spent nearly 20 years raising awareness for organ donation through speeches and fundraising around the world. His tireless advocacy for the cause began with heartbreaking tragedy when in 1994 his seven-year-old son, Nicholas, was killed during a botched robbery while the family vacationed in Italy. Green and his wife, Maggie, made the decision to donate Nicholas’ organs—a rare occurrence at that time in Italy—saving the lives of seven Italians.
“The Gift that Heals” is a collection of stories about lives changed and saved by the generosity of organ donors and their families. Green undertook the project after he and Maggie decided that it was important to spread the word about the importance of organ donation in as many ways as possible.
“I contacted dozens of different hospitals and organ-procurement organizations to try to ask them, which was the most memorable story that you’ve ever come across in transplantation,” Green said. “They supplied these. There’s no shortage of them. I chose the 42 that I thought were the most poignant and the most inspiring, and those are the 42 that are in the book.”
Green went on to say that all of the recipients of Nicholas’ organs, most of whom he and Maggie had the opportunity to meet, went on to live healthy lives. One recipient later married and gave birth to a son she named Nicholas.
