Pope Francis began Christians’ Lenten pilgrimage on Wednesday by walking a narrow line between Roman Catholic doctrine on marriage between the sexes, and society’s growing acceptance of unions between same-sex couples. The Pope’s words could be read as one more opening to those long spurned by the Church’s dogma-driven hierarchy. “Matrimony is between a man and a woman,” Pope Francis declared during an interview with the Milan daily Corriere Della Serra, Italy’s foremost newspaper.
