In 1994, Italy was struggling with widespread addiction to heroin and a growing dependence on South American cocaine. Marijuana consumption had been increasing since the 1960s. Nationwide, there began to be a greater demand not for law enforcement solutions, but for better methods of recovery. That was the year Narconon Astore first opened its doors to provide the solution. In 2013, Narconon Astore celebrated its nineteenth anniversary of saving lives and also one year in its beautiful new facility.

More than 150 graduates, their families and neighbors of the center gathered on June 20, 2013 at the elegant facility in Poggio San Romualdo. Graduates of Narconon Astore and other Narconon centers in Italy or around the world were there to tell their stories. Some of those who spoke had just finished the Narconon program and others had completed up to twenty years earlier. In all, the gathering was treated to thirty-five stories of addiction that was left behind and life that was restored.

Prominent members of the community were also there to express their gratitude for the return of sober, responsible citizens to Italian villages and cities. By way of thanking those who had made this success possible, Narconon Astore presented awards to two people who had provided significant help. Enrico Comi has long been a drug educator for Narconon in Italy. He has traveled to five countries to deliver anti-drug classes to more than 135,000 young people. He was awarded the Star of Social Merit for his many contributions. Also awarded was Mauro Manzari who has been the senior technical supervisor for the center since its opening in 1994.

"Helping someone achieve recovery from addiction is a 24-hour-a-day job, one of life’s hardest," said Clark Carr, president of Narconon International in Los Angeles. "There are many fine staff of Narconon Astore whose hard work over the past 19 years have made this celebration possible. We congratulate them and highly applaud their dedication and care that has resulted in so many lives saved from addiction."

Narconon Astore joins many other Narconon centers around the world also commemorating their decades of service this year. In the coming months, another Italian center, Narconon Gabbiano, will celebrate 23 years, while Narconon Los Molinos in Spain will commemorate a major milestone of three decades of saving lives. Just this past year, Narconon Eslov in Sweden held its thirtieth anniversary event, followed by Narconon Vista Bay in California with its twentieth.

"We look forward to many more years of service from Narconon Astore and many more proud and drug-abstinent graduates who will return home to help others avoid the same fate," added Mr. Carr.
