eReflect Shares The Remarkable Story Of English Language And How Its Spelling Has Evolved Over The Centuries

Languages are always works in progress. There will always be the conservative linguists who want to "keep it pure" but language doesn’t ask for permission, language changes whether people like it or not. A look at the story of the English language will convince the most skeptical, notes eReflect.

New York City, NY (PRWEB) May 05, 2014

The debate is currently raging in many countries about their national language. From India to the US, Singapore, and Italy there are concerns over the best way to keep language pure and unaffected by internationalism, or changed by abuse and decay. eReflect reveals that language cannot be tamed, and that in fact it changes without asking for people’s permission. Since language is an ever-evolving living organism, it will be changing and growing just as the people who use it do.

eReflect, developer of Ultimate Spelling™ software, reminds English language users that what’s considered proper spelling today would have been completely improper 800 hundred years ago. For example, “enough” was spelled “enogh” at one point, and in Old English “enough” was spelled with the (now) virtually unpronounceable set of letters “genōh.” Those in favor of simplifying the English language based on a word's spelling do have a point. It could improve literacy because it would be easier for children to guess the correct spelling of a word that has a perplexing lack of symmetry between letter patterns and pronunciation; it’s easier to guess “enuf” rather than “enough.” This approach, however, is not without issues. Someone’s pronunciation must be considered the standard so that everyone has a point of reference. This makes it virtually impossible for a spelling reform to take place. What would be the criterion by which a particular English dialect is judged to be considered the standard? That’s where the politics of language comes into play, making the issue unsolvable.

On the other side, there are those who believe that a move to simplify orthography would lead to losing many important clues and stories that lie behind words. Just like etymology, spelling signifies the evolution and influences of the English language, a fascinating window into an ever-changing world. Ultimately, it’s not a matter of whether language deteriorates or progresses, because in all its glory and steps backward alike, language evolves. It's only necessary to look at how little - and how much -modern English has in common with Old English and even Shakespeare’s English to see the chain of connections that links modern language to its colorful past.
