Renowned eye surgeon performs first procedure as part of a new study to improve near vision.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 05, 2014

Today, renowned eye surgeon, Dr. Kerry Assil, will perform the first corneal implant surgery with the Presbia Flexiuve Micolens™ as part of an investigational device exemption research study just underway. The procedures and trial will test the safety and effectiveness of the Microlens to improve near vision and decrease dependence on reading glasses in presbyopic adults who are tolerant of monovision.

Dr. Assil, who is at the forefront of research and technology in eye surgery, will be inserting the Microlens—a tiny hydrophilic acrylic implant shaped like a contact lens—in the cornea of the eye using the same type of laser used in LASIK procedures. Once inserted, it will function like a pair of bifocal glasses.

"Having successfully inserted the Presbia Microlens in patients outside of the U.S., it's very exciting to see the launch of our U.S. FDA trials,” said Dr. Assil. “The Microlens appears to be a promising Presbyopia correcting technology, as it can improve the near vision, without significantly impacting distance clarity."

Affecting more than 100 million Americans, presbyopia is a common progressive loss of near vision occurring in individuals primarily between 45-60 years old, causing the need for reading glasses. This is the first of the surgeries, within the study, to be performed in the United States. In a study of the Microlens conducted in Greece and Italy, 97% of patients reported “excellent” or “good” perception of binocular near and distance vision 12 months after implantation of the Microlens.

“We are very pleased to be associated with Dr. Assil and excited for the achievement of this important first step for the United States market,” said Microlens inventor and Presbia’s Chief Technology Officer, Vladimir Feingold.
