‘Wine of Moldova’ will showcase Moldova’s leading wineries in both Washington, DC and New York City this July Featuring Walk-Around Tastings with an additional Guided Tasting Seminar in New York.
NY (PRWEB) July 14, 2014
In an effort to introduce the US market to the varying styles and unique characteristics of wine produced in Moldova, the National Office for Vine & Wine and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of the Republic of Moldova, will present members of the US wine trade and press the opportunity to taste 34 wines of Moldova, from 11 producers, most of which have never been seen in the US before. The two government bodies will present this initiative under the brand name “Wine of Moldova”. From obscure, native grapes such as Rara Neagra, Feteasca Regala and Feteasca Neagra to international varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, a new generation of winemakers - with an eye towards tradition and a taste for modern appeal - are creating wines of great quality with a unique character and terroir.
With wine production dating back over 5,000 years, Moldova is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world. Shaped as a bunch of grapes, Moldova is situated in the southeast of Europe, sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania, in the Black Sea basin. The Republic of Moldova has 112 thousand hectares of vineyard planted with over 30 types of technical varieties. There are four historical wine regions, three of which are designed for the production of wines with protected geographic indication: Valul lui Traian (southwest), Stefan Voda (southeast), Codru (center), and Balti (north). Viticulture in Moldova follows international trends and includes western European varietals, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Aligote, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The true uniqueness of Moldovan wine, however, can be found in its indigenous varietals: Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, Feteasca Neagra, Rara Neagra, Plavai, and Viorica.
The Washington, DC event will be held at Hotel Palomar on Monday, July 28th with a walk-around tasting from 2PM – 5PM. The New York event will be held at Astor Center on Thursday, July 31st, with a guided tasting seminar from 11AM – 12:30PM, as well as a walk-around tasting from 1PM – 4PM. The tasting will showcase wines from the country’s leading producers, representing the key wine growing regions. The guided tasting seminar will be led by Master of Wine Christy Canterbury, a specialist in Pinot Noir, wines from the US and Italy, and also a former judge at the Balkan International Wine Competition.
All the wines at the tasting have been pre-selected by the National Office for Vine and Wine to represent the best examples of Moldovan wine production. There will be a number of wineries attending looking to export to the US for the first time.
Participating wineries/companies include: Small Wine Producers Association, Albastrele Wines, Ampelos, Asconi, Bostavan Winery, Chateau Purcari, Chateau Vartely, Cricova, Lion-Gri, Castel MIMI, Vinaria din Vale.
