IFC Films expanded “Boyhood” into 771 theaters nationwide, and Richard Linklater‘s tale of a family's evolution moved into the top ten at the North American box office with $2.1 million.
That's a $2,789 per-location for the drama, which is up to $13.8 million overall since its limited opening six weeks ago. Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke and Lorelei Linklater star in the 12-years-in-the-making film.
The opening of the comedy “The Trip to Italy” provided more good news for IFC.

The film, based on a British TV sitcom directed by Michael Winterbottom and starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, brought in $71,577 from three theaters in its debut. That's a $23,859 per-screen average for the sequel to the 2011 film “The Trip,” which averaged $12,984 in its debut in six theaters, and went on to take in just over $2 million.
Like the first film, it features Coogan and Bryan on a regional restaurant tour. This time, it's six meals in six different locales around Italy.IFC plans to expand “Trip to Italy,” which is at 87 percent positive on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, into the top 20 markets by Labor Day.
