Cook Medical vs Medtronic in the Peripheral Vascular Market: Difficult Selling Conditions in Europe

The peripheral vascular medical device market will be driven by technological advances, but regional differences and a diverse competitive landscape may make growth challenging, says new report from iData Research.

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) November 19, 2014

According to a recent report by iData Research (http://www.idataresearch.com), the peripheral vascular medical device market is estimated to be worth well over USD 1.8 billion by 2020. Broken down into 14 specific segments, the stent-graft market accounted over a quarter of the peripheral vascular device market. Stent-graft sales margins are high, but competition is fierce, with good reason.

“Stent-grafts are a non-surgical option for aortic aneurysms, the rupturing of which is a serious medical emergency,” explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. “When these ruptures occur in the abdomen, only 10% to 25% of patients survive to hospital discharge. Untreated, about one-third of these kinds of aneurysms will rupture.”

Aortic aneurysm treatment can involve significant risk; the proportion of surgeons performing vascular repair differs from country to country in Europe. This offers a particular challenge to manufacturers, who may have to adapt their sales strategy to regional circumstances. That said, with an average selling price of more than USD 10,000 per unit, revenues can be considerable. iData estimates that European stent-graft unit sales will exceed 40,000 by 2015.

Cook Medical vs Medtronic

While Cook Medical took the overall leading position in the peripheral vascular medical device market, Medtronic claimed first place for stent-graft revenues. However, Medtronic may have this lead challenged in the coming years. W.L. Gore held a close third position, and Lombard Medical’s new Aorfix product may claim additional market share.

Cook Medical’s PV product offerings are significantly more diverse than Medtronic’s, with Cook competing in five other markets in which Medtronic does not have a notable presence.
