International Photography Competition Recognizes Emerging and Professional Talent around the Globe

Los Angeles, Calif. (PRWEB) September 05, 2013

The 2013 American Aperture Awards (AX3) completes its inaugural year with over 1,100 entries from 63 countries. The international photography competition named its winners in three major categories including the Grand Prize title, Photographer of the Year, awarded to Catherine Nelson of Australia for her series of conceptual images. Winners were also announced in 15 additional sub-categories representing a diverse range of photographic fields.

AX3, an initiative of Fabrik Media Group, is an annual open call for photographers of all backgrounds. The competition collected submissions through June of this year with an aggressive outreach to amateur and professional photographers around the globe. Photographers were encouraged to submit their images within 15 categories including abstract, collage, moving images, and street photography.

Alongside grand prize winner Catherine Nelson, AX3 elected a tie in the Emerging Photographer of the Year category between, Mattia Passarini of Italy for his series of portraits and Kelsey Walsh of Australia for his haunting images. Nettie Edwards of the United Kingdom claimed the title, Mobile Photographer of the Year, with her black and white landscapes of the Grand Canal at Versailles. Additional winners and honorable mentions were also announced in the professional, student, non-professional, and mobile categories in a variety of fields.

“Our goal is to recognize emerging and seasoned talent in a range of photographic categories,” remarked Chris Davies, Founder and Director of AX3. “We were looking for artists with uncommon vision whose work is helping to shape today’s diverse photographic landscape. We are thrilled with the caliber of talent and enthusiasm from our entrants, making the final judging process a very difficult one.”

The winners in all categories were determined by an expert panel of international judges from the fields of visual arts, publishing, and education. The panel included curator and photo-historian, Graham Howe, Will Michels from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Maurice Ortega, Director of the Queensland Centre for Photography in Australia, curator Sarah Lee, and Bobbi Fabian, Chair of Photography at New York Film Academy. Author and iPhoneographer, Bob Weil and co-founder of iPhoneart.com, Daria Polichetti, judged mobile photography submissions.

The AX3 grand prize winner was awarded an impressive prize package including a cash honorarium, gallery representation, exhibitions in the United States and Australia, published work in Fabrik magazine, and additional coveted prizes. Each additional category winner was awarded a prize package in a slightly lesser denomination of the grand prize. Additionally, all entrants will be reviewed for participation on artcapitol.com, an online platform that promotes and sells art to thousands of collectors worldwide.
