The Italian Senate voted Wednesday to expel former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi from parliament following his conviction for tax fraud
ROME, Italy -- Italy's controversial former leader Silvio Berlusconi has been stripped of his seat in parliament following a vote by the Italian Senate on Wednesday.
In August, Berlusconi was convicted for tax fraud and sentenced to four years in prison. Stripped of his parliamentary immunity, 77-year-old Berlusconi is now vulnerable in a series of other criminal cases ranging from alleged political bribery to paying for sex with a minor.
Berlusconi, who dominated Italian politics for 20 years, said: "It is a bitter day, a day of mourning," but vowed to stay in politics.
