Kathy Kemper: Dynamic Italy, 2013 Anno Della Cultura Italiana

This year marks a year-long celebration of Italian culture in the U.S., the "Anno Della Cultura Italiana."

Dr. Jacopo Annese, Founder and CEO of the Institute for Brain and Society and Director of The Brain Observatory at the University of California San Diego, is a paragon of the new, dynamic Italy! The Institute for Education welcomed Dr. Annese as its honored speaker at the June 11 Emerging Markets Roundtable luncheon. Professor Annese regaled an intimate group of guests at Villa Firenze, the residence of H.E. Claudio Bisogniero, the Ambassador of Italy to the United States.

H.E. Claudio Bisogniero, Italian ambassador to the U.S., proposed a toast to the longstanding and ever-strong collaboration between Italy and the US, and noted that Professor Annese was a living symbol of that collaboration and also a poster child for what he called "modern Italy" - the scientists, engineers, technologists, economists, the Italian thinkers of the 21st century.

He then gave the floor to Professor Annese, who began with the quote: "I am my mind, I am my brain" and by remarking that his most important mission was to preserve mental life in the growing number of elderly citizens. He noted that one third of Americans die with some form of dementia, and that the socio-economic impact of this little-understood phenomenon is immense.

Part of the solution, Professor Annese said, was to fully understand what happens in the brain of a patient with dementia, which means you have to look at real brains, in the flesh. Understanding the exact nature of the problem can lead to preventive measures or even a cure. Professor Annese talked about his lab's "three weapons" in the battle against cognitive decline. First, engineering and informatics: mapping the human brain on a cellular level is no small feat. Annese's Digital Brain Library is a modern-day brain bank that collects and organizes very detailed three-dimensional digital maps of each individual brain that is donated to the program.

Second, the Internet. The full map of a single brain and the data "contained" therein would require about 1,000 terabytes of disk space! Web technologies allow for such tremendous amounts of information to be stored in "the cloud," and more importantly, to be easily accessed by researchers and health professionals.

Thirdly, citizen science and community buy-in. Because creating an archive of thousands of cases that represent the full spectrum of variability in brain structure and disease requires the active participation of the public and policy makers. Public engagement is also the basis for deep and far-reaching science education and improved knowledge of the brain in particular.

A crucial ingredient, the ambassador commented, was especially important from a "uniquely Italian" perspective. Professor Annese, he said, is not just studying brains; he is portraying the people and families that those brains belonged to, in search of a more complete understanding of what makes different individuals vulnerable to neurological disease, and perhaps more importantly, what makes us human. This aspect provides a holistic context to the project.

Forum attendees included EMR Cofounders Andrew Mitchell of ZIG Capital and John Paul Farmer, Senior Advisor at the White House, Dr. Akaysha C. Tang of the National Science Foundation, and longtime IFE supporter Tom Patton of Philips Electric NA, R. David Edelman, IFE Fellow and Senior Advisor at the White House, and George Zaidan, IFE Science Fellow, Free Energy Productions. Reported by Huffington Post 18 hours ago.

HIGHLIGHTS: Neymar, Fred Lift Brazil Over Italy

By Mark Doyle, Goal.com

Brazil sealed top spot in Confederations Cup Group A with an action-packed 4-2 victory over old rival Italy in Salvador on Saturday night.

The Selecao dominated the opening 45 minutes but only made the breakthrough in injury time at the end of the half, with Dante firing home. Italy drew level in emphatic fashion through Emanuele Giaccherini just after the interval only to see Brazil quickly reassert its supremacy with equally fine strikes from Neymar and Fred.

The Azzurri, though, should have snatched a draw, with an unmarked Christian Maggio heading against the bar shortly after Giorgio Chiellini had dragged Cesare Prandelli's men back into the game, and they were punished for their profligacy by Fred, who netted his second of the game in the dying minutes.

Italy had initially picked up where it had left off against Japan: in complete disarray defensively. Indeed, Brazil twice went close to opening the scoring inside the opening three minutes, with Chiellini making a desperate last-ditch challenge to stop Oscar, before Gianluigi Buffon had to get down well to keep out a low, angled strike from Hulk.

Italy did its utmost to weather the early storm and even carved out an opening on 18 minutes when Claudio Marchisio drove forward down the left wing before pulling the ball back for Mario Balotelli, who badly scuffed his shot, resulting in the easiest of saves for Julio Cesar.

However, Italy was still being overrun in midfield and Cesare Prandelli unsurprisingly elected to make a first-half substitution for the second game in succession, sending Emanuele Giaccherini on in place of Riccardo Montolivo, with the dynamic Marchisio dropping back into midfield alongside Alberto Aquilani.

Sadly, the Azzurri were forced into a second change before the half-hour mark, with Ignazio Abate suffering a shoulder injury after being cynically taken out by Neymar, who, just moments beforehand, had been felled by the AC Milan fullback.

Even the crowd began to get tetchy the longer the half wore but the tension was broken just before the break, with Dante, on as a replacement for the injured David Luiz, exhibiting impressive composure in coolly slotting home the rebound, after Buffon had pulled off a terrific save to keep out a close-range header from Fred.

The second half looked set to continued in much the same vein as the first, with Brazil bossing possession and territory, and the hosts could even have doubled their advantage within a minute of the restart, but Oscar shot too tamely at Buffon, after the ball had dropped for the Chelsea ace on the edge of the area.

However, Italy then leveled out of nowhere. There appeared to be no danger when Buffon punted the ball long, but Antonio Candreva headed it on before Balotelli acrobatically flicked into space for Giaccherini. The much-maligned utility man appeared to hesitate for a second but he then unleashed a blistering drive from just inside the area that gave Julio Cesar no chance.

Order was restored almost immediately, though, with Neymar deceiving Buffon with a terrific free kick, after the Brazilian No.10 had himself been taken down on the edge of the Azzurri box.

Balotelli almost replied in kind on the hour, but his long-range set piece was fumbled away to safety by Julio Cesar. As it was, it was Brazil which struck next in an increasingly chaotic encounter, with Fred finishing in style, after his run in between Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci was expertly picked out by Marcelo.

Italy was not done yet, though, and it set up a frantic finale when the ball dropped for Alberto Aquilani in the six-yard box, allowing him to tee up Chiellini, who scuffed the ball into the bottom left corner of the Selecao goal.

Maggio then crashed a header against the bar as Italy finished the stronger but it was caught cold on the break late on, with Fred on hand to convert after Buffon had been unable to hold onto a shot from Marcelo, meaning the Azzurri will most likely face Spain in the semis. CHICAGO & RAMAT GAN, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- *LabStyle Innovations Corp. (OTCQB: DRIO)*, developer of the Dario™ smartphone-based glucose monitor and diabetes data-management system, announces that Harmonium Pharma has been named as the exclusive distributor for Dario in Italy. LabStyle made this announcement from the American Diabetes Association's 73^rd Scientific Sessions, which is underway at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago.

Based in London with affiliates in France and Italy, Harmonium Pharma is focused on serving the needs of diabetology, with a commercial product portfolio that includes medical devices, food supplements, dermocosmetics and medicinal foods. The company is led by Ugo Cosentino, the former President and CEO of Pfizer (NYS: PFE) Italy. According to Business Insights, there are approximately 4 million people living with diabetes in Italy and diabetes-related national healthcare expenditure exceed $11 billion annually.

Under the terms of the agreement, Harmonium will exclusively market and distribute Dario and its all-in-one software system and proprietary test strips to primary-care medical practices, clinics, hospitals and patients throughout Italy following receipt of CE mark. Planned marketing campaigns are directed to diabetes centers, gatherings of medical professionals, the Italian national healthcare system and social media outlets. LabStyle will support Harmonium's work to build awareness and drive sales of Dario via patient awareness utilizing its own online presence.

"With their sole focus on diabetes, Harmonium Pharma is an ideal partner for Dario in Italy," said Dr. Oren Fuerst, LabStyle's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Our engagement of Harmonium Pharma adds to our European commercial infrastructure. Beyond our already announced activities in the U.K., Belgium and the Nordic countries, we continue to speak with other distributors for coverage in key geographies, primarily in Europe, as well as prepare for our own direct marketing of Dario once we receive CE mark."

Harmonium Pharma has 24 sales agents who call upon diabetologists, pharmacists and diabetic patients across Italy. The company has a strong technical support team that develops, implements and delivers business solutions tailored to the needs of the diabetologists, with a commitment to exceptional customer service.

Dario is a comprehensive system that combines an all-in-one self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) device consisting of a lancet to obtain a blood sample, a novel disposable test strip cartridge and a glucose reader adaptor that interfaces with the smartphone, with a smartphone application and internet-based data services. Among other features, Dario includes a data log for blood glucose, food intake, insulin recommendation and analysis, and sharing.

Dario is expected to be particularly useful to insulin-dependent patients (both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics) who check their blood glucose levels multiple times each day, and represents an innovative alternative to the more cumbersome, standalone SMBG test kits that are the current market standard. Dario's ease of use is expected to improve testing compliance and increase monitoring. In addition, Dario will provide patients, caregivers and clinicians both real-time and historic data with the goal of better management of blood glucose levels and improved health.

Dario is pending receipt of the CE mark. LabStyle also expects to launch Dario in Europe in 2013 and subsequently in other jurisdictions, including the U.S., Asia and South America, following receipt of applicable regulatory approvals.
